Weekend of fail

See that brown, greyish slush? That is my horribly bad attempt at making macaroons. Everything that can possible go wrong went wrong. Maybe I was aiming a little bit too high with goal 8 in my Twelve by 2012. I am going to crawl under my bed and cry now. Happy Sunday everyone.

  1. Oh Sweetie, Don't be too hard on yourself. I'm told they are hard to make.

  2. Thanks Jode, I think I'm going to invest in an electric mixer for my next attempt.

  4. I'm glad I'm not the only one, really makes you appreciate why it costs so much for a tiny macaroon.

  5. As said above don't be too hard on yourself and never give up. I've tried and failed but I persisted and have successfully made some. I'm not too sure when you started making the macaroons, but as with anything that needs a lot of air and whipping (like Pavlova) you really shouldn't do it when it is humid as the moisture in the air is whipped into the product you are making, weighing it down. Also you need to make sure that the bowl is absolutely clean and dry and that the eggs have been absolutely separated, as the slightest element can completely destroy your macaroon.

    Keep trying Carmen! :)

  6. I was using a hand whisk, so couldn't bring the egg whites to any sort of peak. I don't know how the monks do it back in the 18th century (which I've learnt was when they were first invented). Anyhow, no I won't give up, but might get an electric first before my next attempt.

  7. Good try! I've made them successfully in the past, but I am totally a slave to my electric mixer. I think you're right. You probably need an electric mixer for the trick to work.

  8. Try again! Mine were fine the second try. And everyone raved about them. An electric beating will make all the difference for you I'm sure :)

  9. It seems like an electric mixer is the go. Right, time to investigate.
